Growth Deal
£3,000,000
Summary
To build on Gloucestershire’s existing prestige in cyber security, and further develop STEM skills in young people, the GFirst LEP supported the University of Gloucestershire’s plans to develop a purpose-built centre in Berkeley.
What is the Berkeley Cyber Security C11 project?
Gloucestershire is home to a number of the world’s leading cyber security companies, plus the Government’s intelligence and technology centre (GCHQ), and has established itself as a national force in cyber. Complementing early developments at the University of Gloucestershire’s Park Campus, and the ongoing Cyber Park programme in Cheltenham, the C11 centre was proposed as an all-in-one solution for students and businesses to capitalise on the growing cyber landscape in the region.
The C11 Cyber Security and Digital Innovation Centre in Berkeley is equipped with cutting edge technologies and state-of-the-art digital security, to fire the growth and advancement of specialist firms, and specialist skills, in a discreet environment.
Operating an ‘Open Zone’ and a ‘Closed Zone’ - the centre gives opportunities for tech entrepreneurs to collaborate (with each other and students), but also a government-grade, access-controlled space for discretion and security.
Who benefits from this project?
C11 offers a number of benefits to a number of different groups.
It represents a new location for cyber businesses to work or base their operations. The infrastructure is designed to meet the unique needs of these businesses, which will move or create new jobs in the area.
It also provides a specialised environment for young people and students to hone their cyber security skills. With industry standard computer labs, graduates of the University of Gloucestershire’s courses will enter the workplace much better equipped than if they had been through the traditional learning method.
What stage is the project currently at?
The C11 Cyber Security and Digital Innovation Centre in Berkeley is now fully open for business.
Why is this project important for Gloucestershire and the local community?
Gloucestershire’s booming cyber security scene is a key driver for the county, in terms of economic growth, skills, and employment. The development of a purpose-built centre, with good access links for out-of-county travel, is an important lynchpin for the cyber strategy.
The role C11 plays in supporting new cyber businesses, providing high-tech facilities for established businesses, and connecting students with industry - will foster high growth throughout the sector and help Gloucestershire defend its position
C11’s incubator role gives new cyber businesses a greater chance of success, whilst giving young cyber professionals the ability to interface with industry, in a safe and secure environment.
What are the final results of the project?
The C11 Cyber Security and Digital Innovation Centre in Berkeley now offers :
- The county's leading centre for cyber security training and research, with training and education from 14 years through to doctorate level research, as well as commercial engagement;
- A high quality conference centre of national quality;
- New sector-specific higher education courses to meet industry needs;
- Outreach programmes to promote cyber skills to young people;
