The Staverton site was awarded the ‘Best General Aviation Airport 2016’ title at the Airport Operators’ Association annual conference and dinner at London’s Metropole hotel on Monday night. The award is voted for by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), whose members previously selected the airfield in 2013 and 2014.
Operations Director, Darren Lewington, who collected the award said: - “I’m honoured to accept this accolade on behalf of the excellent team at Gloucestershire Airport. Their commitment, dedication and enthusiasm are what set us apart from our competitors and it is great to see our customers recognising their efforts again, especially in a very challenging marketplace. We’re proud of the achievement and looking forward to building on our strengths as the Airport develops.”
Gloucestershire Airport is the UK’s busiest general aviation airport and is on course to handle 80 000 flights this year. It is home to more than 180 aircraft, ranging from microlights to intercontinental business jets. Private and commercial pilot training and specialist helicopter operations form the bulk of operations with growing corporate and business aviation sectors. Scheduled flights operate daily to the Isle of Man with onward connections to Belfast, Glasgow and Newcastle and a seasonal Jersey service. The Airport employs 50 staff but the site supports more than 40 businesses and over 1000 jobs.
More than 60 000 sq ft of hangar and office accommodation are currently under construction to cope with growing demand.
Managing director, Mark Ryan added: - “At a time when other general aviation airports around the UK are coming under increasing pressure from housing and development, it is important that we strengthen our portfolio and provide the services that the industry needs. The award reaffirms that we’re heading in the right direction and we’re grateful for the support of our customers and shareholders.”
