The Cheltenham Trust are seeking a creative person or organisation to assist with exhibition

The Last Word in Art will be a large scale exhibition shown in both temporary exhibition galleries at The Wilson and some interventions within the permanent collection galleries.

The project has been originated by The Wilson working with the Arts Council Collection.  Highlights from The Wilson fine art collection and the Arts Council Collection are drawn together to create an exhibition with several themes and narratives which focus on the title of the exhibition – The Last Word in Art.  Artists confirmed in the exhibition include David Hockney, Richard Hamilton, Ian Hamilton Finlay and Tracey Emin.   The themes are set out as follows:

Permanent Galleries

  • Disruption and Interruption: a mix of art within the permanent collection that asks the viewer to question art and their reading of the collection

Exhibition Galleries

  • Foundations -  including Cubism and Surrealism
  • Technique and Communication – considers how artists have layered information, reorganised information to convey messages through using different materials and techniques including collage
  • Word and Body – references how artists have used their work to tell autobiographical stories
  • Literary and Visual – explores how words have become integral to the artwork, being equal or more important to the content, for example concrete poets
  • The Last Word  - Today includes examples of post modernism and the participatory element

Brief for Creatives

The final section of the exhibition will include a participatory element that places the audiences in the centre of the activity; drawing out their views, ideas and comments as triggered by the exhibition itself through engagement and creativity.  This element of the Exhibition will be physically based in the ‘chill out’ zone which directly accesses gallery space.  There is a genuine desire to develop new practice and enable The Wilson to develop its reputation as an innovative and exciting venue that ensures audiences are at the centre of activity.

This is an audience focused brief for the development of a clear concept and delivery outcomes which will:

  • Enable audiences to have the last ‘word’ – for example:  to leave their thoughts and views enabling free speech and/or views on the exhibition itself/art
  • Take an experimental and creative approach to audience participation
  • Enable a reflection of the experience encountered in the exhibition and promote/foster responses from audiences
  • Enable audience led production and response – for example: an interactive element that enables visitors to be at the centre of leading the response rather than The Wilson defining the areas of response
  • Enable a high quality outcome/impact (visually) that can be shared with other audiences and be a trigger for further responses
  • Have a physical presence in the chill out space and potential virtual presence also the space is approx. 33sqm (6mx5.5m)Meet access and equality standards for access to all
  • Enable quick response/production/interaction that leads to further responses/production/interaction
  • Have the potential to provide a legacy to the exhibition itself
  • Meet the project timeframes and protocols set by The Wilson
