The University of Gloucestershire has launched a new, employer-led Engineering course.

The brand new course will begin in September this year and has been designed in conjunction with some of Gloucestershire’s leading engineering and manufacturing companies and the county’s enterprise partnership, GFirst LEP.

The innovative part time, day release course is a Level 6 BEng Top-Up Integrated Engineering in Integrated Engineering and is aimed at either students with prior academic study or those with industry experience, knowledge or relevant work experience.

Dr Kevin Hapeshi, Head of School, Computing and Technology at the University of Gloucestershire, said: “We are delighted to launch the BEng Integrated Engineering course and very pleased that this has been developed with some of the best engineering and manufacturing businesses in the county.”

“Gloucestershire has a wealth of excellent engineering companies and it is a very important sector for the county. The University has worked closely with the likes of Spirax Sarco, Ultra Electronics and Delphi, as well as GFirst LEP, to create a high-level engineering programme. The aim is that it will up-skill employees for future career progression, as well as providing businesses with the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge within the workforce.”

Mike Simmonds, Business Development Manager at the University of Gloucestershire, said: “The launch of this innovative course is further evidence of the University’s commitment to investing in research, technology and staffing to support business needs and working in partnership industry to help economic growth in the region.”

Alex Mattos, Head of Engineering at Ultra Electronics Precision Air & Land Systems, said: “Ultra’s main strength is its people and the skills that they bring to our products and services. Continually developing our staff is very important to the continued success of Ultra and this new course gives us the opportunity to further develop the academic knowledge of our staff who may have not come through the traditional graduate route into engineering. I am very pleased that we were able to shape the content of this course to ensure that it meets the needs of our business for the future.”

The course will enable students to combine skills in mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, computer enabled technology and manufacturing and engineering to meet the requirements for modern industry and satisfy the needs of the local and national economy.

The course will be validated at the end of June and will be run at the University of Gloucestershire’s Park Campus in Cheltenham.
